At A Glance
Klaus and Harley are Board & Train dogs working with Trainer Katie at Off Leash K9 Training Fredericksburg. During this training session, both dogs practiced the Place command outdoors while staying on separate cots. Practicing outside adds real-world distractions, including changing sights, sounds, and activities. The goal is to help Klaus and Harley remain on Place and stay engaged with their handler even when the environment competes for their attention.
Dogs: Klaus and Harley
Location: Fredericksburg, VA
Program: Board & Train
Trainer: Katie
Main Goal: Strengthen Place around outdoor distractions
Outcome: Training underway to improve command duration, focus, and responsiveness in distracting environments
The Challenge
Practicing a command in a quiet environment is different from performing it successfully when distractions are present. For Klaus and Harley, outdoor Place practice introduces more environmental activity while asking them to remain on their assigned cots.
Training goals included:
- Holding the Place command
- Staying focused around outdoor distractions
- Improving command duration
- Remaining on separate cots
- Building better responsiveness
- Practicing obedience in a more realistic setting
The Training Approach
Trainer Katie worked with both dogs outside, using individual cots as clear Place targets. The outdoor setting gave Klaus and Harley opportunities to practice staying in position while nearby sights and sounds competed for their attention.
The session focused on:
- Reinforcing the Place command
- Building duration
- Practicing around environmental distractions
- Encouraging handler engagement
- Strengthening consistency outside
- Helping each dog remain settled on their own cot
Practicing obedience in different environments can help dogs learn that a command still applies even when the surroundings change.
The Results
The provided update captures Klaus and Harley during their training rather than after a completed program, so final outcomes are not yet available.
Skills Being Developed
- Stronger Place behavior
- Better focus outside
- Longer command duration
- Improved responsiveness around distractions
- More consistent obedience in different environments
Specific final improvements should be added only after their training progress has been confirmed.
Trainer Insight
A dog may understand Place indoors but still struggle when the environment becomes more interesting. Practicing around controlled distractions can help strengthen reliability by teaching dogs that the same expectations apply in different settings. Gradually increasing difficulty also gives dogs opportunities to succeed without making the exercise unnecessarily overwhelming.
