Dog: Waffles
Location: Fredericksburg, VA
Program: Board and Train
Trainer: Colby
Main Focus: Sit command, focus, and real-world distractions
Outcome: Progress with sit, attention, and obedience around distractions
The Challenge
Practicing obedience in a quiet environment is different from responding reliably when there are distractions nearby.
Waffles needed opportunities to practice staying focused and following the sit command while experiencing the activity and stimulation that come with real-world environments.
During training, Waffles worked on:
- Strengthening the sit command
- Staying focused around distractions
- Responding to training cues in public environments
- Building more consistent obedience
- Practicing calm behavior while activity was happening nearby
These training sessions gave Waffles opportunities to apply learned skills outside of a controlled setting.
The Training Approach
Trainer Colby worked with Waffles during a real-world outing as part of the Board and Train program.
Rather than practicing the sit command only in a low-distraction environment, Waffles was asked to maintain focus while different distractions were happening nearby.
Training focused on:
- Reinforcing the sit command
- Improving attention to the trainer
- Practicing obedience around environmental distractions
- Building greater consistency with learned commands
- Helping Waffles stay engaged despite surrounding activity
Working in real-world environments can help dogs practice responding to familiar commands when everyday distractions are present.
The Results
During the outing, Waffles continued putting in the work and practicing the sit command around real-world distractions.
What Waffles practiced and improved:
- Stronger responses to the sit command
- Better focus during training
- More experience working around distractions
- Continued development of obedience skills
- Greater familiarity with practicing commands outside controlled environments
Each training session provided another opportunity for Waffles to strengthen these skills and build a more consistent obedience foundation.
Trainer Insight
For Waffles, the goal of this session was not simply performing a sit. The added challenge was maintaining attention and responding while distractions were happening nearby.
Practicing familiar commands in different environments can help dogs build stronger focus and become more comfortable applying their training during everyday situations.
