Meet Piper
Quick Summary
- Dog: Piper (1-year-old Spaniel Boykin Mix)
- Location: Fredericksburg, VA
- Main Struggle: Low confidence + barking at people and dogs on walks
- Program: 2-Week Board & Train + Private Lessons
- Result: Loose leash walking, calm behavior around distractions, and reliable recall (in appropriate settings)
The Challenge
What Life Looked Like Before
Piper was a sweet, smart young dog. At home, she could follow commands. But the moment she went outside, everything changed.
On walks, Piper would:
- bark at people and dogs
- get overstimulated fast
- stop listening when distractions showed up
Her owner explained it best: once Piper left the house, she would “lose it” and bark at what was around her. Walks felt stressful because they never knew what would set her off.
This wasn’t Piper being “bad.” It was low confidence. When she didn’t know what to do, barking became her go-to reaction.

The Plan (Diagnosis + Training Solution)
What We Focused On
Trainer Colby built Piper’s program around two goals:
- Confidence + neutrality (calm around people, dogs, and everyday life)
- Stronger obedience foundations (so commands work outside the home too)
Step-by-Step Training Approach
1) Decompression + Trust (First 1–2 Days)
We gave Piper time to settle in, feel safe, and build trust. A calm dog learns faster.
2) Refined the Basics
Piper knew commands, but distractions broke them. We tightened up:
- engagement (checking in with the handler)
- consistency
- follow-through
This made her obedience reliable—not just “sometimes.”
3) E-Collar Conditioning (Clear Communication)
We introduced the e-collar as a communication tool (not punishment). It helped Piper understand what to do when distractions showed up.
4) Structured Walks + Neutrality
We practiced calm walking and calm passes. Piper learned:
- seeing a dog/person doesn’t mean she has to react
- her job is to stay connected and move forward calmly
5) Place Command + Impulse Control
“Place” became Piper’s calm button. It taught her to settle and stay relaxed, even when exciting things were happening.
6) Real-World Practice in Fredericksburg
Once Piper was solid in training, we practiced in real places with real distractions—so her progress carried over into everyday life.
Why Private Lessons Were Included
Private lessons helped the owner learn how to handle Piper correctly at home, maintain the training, and keep improving after the Board & Train.
The Results (After Training)
What Changed
After 14 days, Piper was calmer, more confident, and much easier to handle.
Piper can now:
- walk on a loose leash
- stay calm around people and dogs
- listen with distractions (instead of barking)
- hold Place with real-world activity happening
- do off-leash recall (in appropriate settings)
She now succeeds in:
- downtown Fredericksburg walks
- public parks
- family gatherings
- everyday outings (stores and more)
